Ask Jill: Help! My House Is Dull…

Jill,
I put my holiday decor away, and now my poor main floor looks dead.  I bought new furnishings that looked great in the showroom, but have proven to be mistakes.  I just want my home to be beautiful and romantic.  It’s still so blah.  Any ideas?  Help!
– Brianna in Fairway, KS

Brianna,
When people ask me my favorite color, the answer is easy—“sparkly!”   I bring it into rooms any time opportunity allows.  Just as I want sparkles adorning my wardrobe, I want it in my rooms…glimmering in the corner, glistening overhead, reflecting all around. Like dancing sun rays, “room jewelry” allows happiness to radiate and interiors to come alive.

Light is magic.  Think of the shimmering gilded dome of our city’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.   Imagine your dream car buffed to a mirror shine while driving beneath the Plaza lights, local fountains refracting sunlight as they magnify the wishes purchased with tossed pennies, or a new driver—polished to a tee—launching the ball at Loche Loyd.  There is nothing like brilliant, shiny and new.

Bringing that sparkle into your home requires finessing existing light sources such as windows, fixtures, lamps, and candles. Reflecting or enhancing these will provide still greater effect, so select a few ideas listed here, get engaged, and adorn, adorn. One way to do this is to enhance the walls themselves. Today’s metallic paints and foiled wallpapers offer options in color, pattern and surprising zing. Some papers even feature tiny glass “beads” that reflect light and change their shade as you move about the room.

Windows offer the opportunity for natural light, so OPEN THEM!  It always amazes me when driving around such a beautiful city that so many homes have their windows—and window treatments—closed all day, all year.  Let the sun kiss your face and invite nature to join your lifestyle. Then enhance your windows with great drapes.  Try fabrics accented with metallic threads, beading, reflective embroidery details or rich, lush silks (any silks should be interlined to help prevent sun damage).   Add a “necklace” to your window with fringes bursting with beads and crystals.  You can echo the effect with decorative pillows.  Don’t be stingy…make it decadent!  Instead of covering your front door’s sidelights with drapes for privacy, add stained, beveled or seeded glass panels.  Consider complementing some of the room’s sparkle with deep velvets or richly textured fabrics. They will absorb just enough light to create depth and drama.

Every well-dressed room should have a chandelier!  In gracious homes, their employment is not just in foyers and dining rooms.  Allow them to serve your bedroom, bath or even your closet (your shoes and jewelry will sparkle, too!) Add bobeches (the small glass or metal dishes that appear to support the chandelier’s candles) adorned with beads, pearls or crystals.  Even changing your bulbs to the crystal clear style or a brighter wattage can add sparkle.  On your lamps, change the finial at the top to crystal.  Add a pair of sconces that flank your mantle and dangle still more jewelry from their arms.

To add some dazzle to your furnishings, consider polished upholstery tacks, decorative trims or new drawer and cabinet pulls.  New doorknobs for each room are a nice detail that can also enhance exterior doors.  When changing an exterior handle, replace or add a new kick plate to match.

Punctuate your mirrors with metallic frames and beveled edges. Place them so they are opposite a window or other light source to double the brightness. Artwork behind standard glass can emulate a mirror and can be used to your advantage in the same way—in most cases, clear or museum glass is preferable anyway.

Of course, accessories offer lots of opportunities for sparkle.  Crystal, glass, and metal objects reflect light, and can refresh a tired table or shelf.

After you have adorned your interior and adjusted the lighting, treat yourself to a romantic dinner.  Your home will now have something in common with our city’s twinkling lights as witnessed from the Hyatt’s Skies or the shimmering sculpture in its lobby. Or better yet, eat THERE (or your own special place) and return to your nest for a night cap. And just as you’re melting into your loved one’s arms, catch a glimpse of your room’s new jewelry—and the sparkle that matches the twinkle in his eye.

Make it fab!

Eye Candy

I love the details of a room.  They make it or break it.  Thought this photo from Brimar was adorable and wanted to share the details they offer.  I also love thinking outside the (pastry) box.  Nibble, nibble…and enjoy!

These happy and bright colors make me smile!

A Last Fall-ra-ra-ra-ra to Autumn!

As much as I love the rich, warm and delicious colors of fall, I love the bold, striking and metallic colors of the winter season, too!  So until we say, “Hello,” to the festive colors of December, let’s enjoy one last day in my favorite season of fall.

So alas, I will reflect on some wonderful spaces from my pocket of work in shades of pumpkins, golds, reds and chocolates just once more for 2009…

The “BEFORE” and “AFTERS” below:  The goals for this first room were to create a warm and “spicy” room that was soft and inviting while still masculine and “interesting.”  My interpretation and solutions?

"BEFORE" In the process...we chose the stains, tiles...everything! The client is so excited.

"DURING" In the middle of the process...we already had the stains, tiles...everything! chosen and ready to go! The client was so excited to get everything done...

kutkgghj

"AFTER"

A tall piece of original artwork from Jean Yancey (the second piece to the series is just around the corner from the first) is a wonderful welcome into the room.  The rustic lamps, hand-thrown pottery and rich woods give the space a great look and livability.  Where do the children do their homework?  By gathering around “the-coffee-table-of-many-drawers” that houses everything they might need, of course!  The ultra plush sofa, copper table and cowhide rug give a warmth and comfort like a fresh baked pumpkin pie.

kjgkjhg

"BEFORE" On the opposite side of the room you just saw, lives the area where all pies and goodies are to be baked. You can tell by the fan, it was very hot during this point in the home's construction.

ljfkjh

"AFTER"

Can’t you just smell the fresh cinnamon bread, stews and desserts?  The stone for the top of the counter was hand-selected to accent the warm wall color and stains on the floor and cabinets I chose. Unusual light fixtures over the bar add interest and are even more amazing in person.  The small hand carved stool in the corner? … for the children to sit on while doing homework, watching television or can serve as extra seating when guests arrive.  Bon Appetite!

cjghchb

"DURING" The stone hearth was beautiful, but lost amongst mundane furnishings. How to lose the ho-hum look?

,jhvkjhf

"AFTER"

…by bringing the space to life with decedent fall colors, a new mantle and furniture layout.  The stone is now on stage (as it should be) adding interest and an earthiness to the space.  Just a casual, warm and welcoming invite is what this room reads.  Would you care to sit down and have a cup of coffee?  Do you take cream?  Happy fall to you!

Make Beautiful Table Centerpieces Guests Will Be Thankful For

I just love Thanksgiving.  It is the beginning of the cozy, fireplace-y, snuggle-y times of the season.

I have much to be thankful for this year…including you! THANK YOU for joining me every week on my blog!

Here is a bit of inspiration for you and your table.

blogs.glam.com

Above – a great idea from glamnest…if your name is Sonya!  :)

When setting your table:

  • Choose centerpieces that allow your guests to SEE each other!
  • Watch out for candles and the little ones
  • Your dining room chandelier should be on a dimmer switch to create a warm feeling
  • Keep all of your lamps on your main floor and entertaining areas on their lowest settings and turn off overhead fixtures
  • Light your fireplace or a small grouping of candles (don’t use scented candles as it will battle the aromas of your yummy dinner!)

I will add MY OWN table’s centerpieces for you to see shortly, too!

Have a happy, light, fun and joyous Thanksgiving.   CHEERS!!!!

Designing Behind Closed Doors

It is well known that a good interior designer makes a space look good, but if it doesn’t function well it can never be fully enjoyed.

And my question to you:  Why, oh why, can’t a closet function well and look great, too?

After working on a pair of closets in Boca Raton, Florida this past week, I thought I would share with you a few pics of them.  they were a fun transformation and you can read further to see some of the great “extras” included.

There is just nothing like an organized closet…but one that looks like a boutique, that is easy and fun to use is best!

"AFTER" His closet is now handsome with work, sport and casual wear each in their intended spots, a slick leather bench for dressing and drawers with leather pulls for orgainzation to the nines!

Some great features in this closet are the special locks.  They are Rev-A-Shelf’s brand called Rev-A-Lock.  The best thing about them (as you can see below) is there is no lock showing on the decorative front.  The locking mechanism is magnetized and internal.  You simply place the lock on the front of the cabinet in the correct spot and turn.

Another great detail in this closet? The beaded hangers that are amazing.  Made for all types of garments, they hold straps in place to keep them from sliding off, are less likely to leave those annoying pucker marks on shoulders and are beautiful.  The only downside in my opinion, is they cannot hold pants, skirts or a set.  Worth it!

I just LOVE these beaded hangers!

Just like with any room in the house…it is in the details!

9 Rules For Your Home Decor, Or A Billion

There are a few things I have learned over the years with all of the thousands of questions I receive. In a quick nutshell, here are some of the basics.   I hope they urge you to study your home a little more closely…and to study yourself.

I just love going into people’s private spaces and learning about them so quickly by just looking around.  If a picture is a thousand words, each home is a billion.

A photo from my studio...

A photo from my studio...

Walking into my clients’ homes for the very first time, I see the “old them.”  I hear how their lives are growing and changing, their wishes.  It is from that point that I begin to interpret their goals and dreams into their living spaces. It is a wonderful and inspiring conversation. I am honored to get to help create the “new them.”  Beauty is in all of us, all the time, you just have to know how to bring that beauty out and into your home!

1.  Your home and it’s contents are a complete reflection of you. Edit what yours screams.

2.  “We shape our environments; thereafter they shape us.” -Winston Churchill.   Create an environment that supports what you want and where you are going.

3.  Think outside the box and take educated chances or accept an unimaginative level of interior.

4.  If buying low-end/run-of-the-mill pieces, you will replace them sooner than expected, waste your budget and add to our landfills.  Buy better.

5.  It is extremely satisfying when friends and family feel comfortable in and enjoy your home as much as you do.  Create a welcoming environment.

6.  Don’t let your home look like most everyone else’s!  Express YOUrself.

7.  Children should learn to live amongst beautiful and elegant things.  Don’t limit yourself.

8.  Patiently cherry-pick the perfect piece of furniture, accessory, art, etc.. It will bring you joy to relive the feeling of success every time you see it.

9.  Choose how you and your family want to feel each and every day and create that…starting now!

Make it fab!

Highlights From International Furniture Market, Artwork and Lighting

I cannot believe another High Point Furniture and Accessory Market has come and gone.

This enormous, biannual international market is brimming with the latest and greatest from designers and companies around the world.  It is what a runway show is for fashion, only it is for home fashion…and we do all the walking.

The latest furnishings, casegoods, fabrics, accessories, lighting, artwork, rugs, details and ideas, etc. are there on display to sell to the trade.  It is eye candy like you have never seen and takes up building after building from their ground to top floors, for blocks and blocks.

I just adore going.

Here are a few things I thought you might enjoy seeing.  While this is a tiny, tiny amount, it is fun to see what will slowly trickle down to the shelter magazines such as Traditional Home, Elle Decor and Architectural Digest, in the next year or so.  I just snap quick shots with my little camera each time so you can imagine how amazing they are in person…

Enjoy!

KC Home Design Mag Follows Me Through The Explosion

IMG_2395

Buying at the High Point Furniture and Accessory Market in North Carolina is great fun. Tiring and exhausting, but fun! I would love to know how many SKU’s I see a day there…it would have to be in the gazillions. I know many “newbies” to the market never return as it is an explosion of eye candy that not many minds can wrap around and retain – let alone mentally design with.

The article KC Home Design published in this month’s issue tells all, titled, “Saturday,” but there just wasn’t room enough for everything! So here are more pics that I would like to share with you from the buying trip, too. I could talk about it all day….
This gives you a tiny taste of the ridiculous amounts of product I sift through to cherry pick for my wonderful and fab clients. Then…make it work for their lifestyle, architecture, budget and personal taste.

IMG_8104

I love this fixture designed by Paul de Haan.  It has a wonderful shape in that it isn’t a perfect sphere.  It’s inconsistent and icy ornate look is glamorous in a Star Trek-y sort of way.  An example of detail…the bulb with their mirrored surface, makes all the difference.
