Best Bath Remodel, Award by KCH&G Magazine, “Before” and “After” Photos

“Sexy.”  That was the direction I was asked to take the design of this bath remodel (See the “BEFORE” below).  “Clean, white, bright, and some bling!” is what she asked for.  It was to have great storage and some unusual elements.  Our aim was clear.

Once again, Clay Lyon of Lyon Construction did a fantastic job with his crews at applying all of the finishes I chose.

"BEFORE" A small, dated and awkward layout of 2 closets and 2 bathrooms.

"BEFORE" A small, dated and awkward layout of 2 closets and 2 bathrooms.

I give you...Sexy.

The tiles I chose were so fun to design with.

Many people don’t understand what a designer does for a remodel or new construction.  For example, on this bath, I chose each tile’s style, color and size, where it was to go and how it is to be installed.  We chose the cabinets, size, color, finish.  We found the legs and had those installed.  The shower…what doors was it to have?  To the ceiling?  What faucets and shower heads?  Where in the shower?  What should we do on each wall?  What type of lighting should be enough and where should it go?  What type of tub, faucets, counter top, sink, their faucets?  Etc…

I love the wallpaper in the above shot.  It is glass beads on vinyl.  I had the wallpaper hanger split it in half length-wise and hang it horizontally for a unique look.  Under the cabinets, we has lighting installed as a “night light” for safer trips in the middle of the night.

Can you see the beading on the wallpaper and the subtle metallic flecks in the counter top?  Gorgeous, but not too much.

After a job well done: Myself with the contractor, Clay Lyon of Lyon Construction.

Shawnee Magazine Feature, Our Client Is Thrilled!

As an interior designer in Kansas City, it is so wonderful to have our work in print.  Thank you, Shawnee Magazine.

I have some details on the living room below…where we began and how the design became magazine ready.

The article in Shawnee Magazine...and the "After"

The Living Room:

These wonderful clients had a living room space with an awkward floor plan.  It was a long room with great windows and a magnificent view, but the room itself left something to be desired.  They wanted a sectional and great seating for entertaining.  Lighting was an issue in the evening.  She loved green so she and I decided to complement the outdoors and frame them with beautiful pieces with great lines.  The silhouettes in front of the windows needed to be sleeker pieces were what would make her happy.  All of the aging oak needed to be toned down a bit as well.

The Living Room:

Our design solutions?

This new area for entertaining needed some wonderful color, softness and beauty so we played up the greens, added drapes up to the crown molding and some beautiful furnishings and accents.  The original oil was commissioned and is fun, unexpected and cuts the space perfectly.  For handsome silhouettes in front of the grand windows, natural sticks, a darling lamp with a semi-opaque glass body and a “tree” table base over marble were perfect.

They are both so thrilled now with their main living space.  It was great fun to help them take a room they had no feelings for and make it wonderful for them and their family to enjoy everyday.

“Before, During and After” Photos, A Black And Silver Master Bedroom

WHAT, OH WHAT, HAD THE CLIENT BEEN DREAMING OF?

There is nothing more fabulous than someone who know what kind of bedroom they want…a gorgeous one!  This client loves black high contrasts in color.  Like a classic car, the colors were to be black and silver.  We needed slick design with storage bigger than a glove box and a clean, simple elegance…not too much “stuff” if you know what I mean.

So everything had to change.

PART OF THE PLANNING:

Upon finding the most amazing stripe fabric in black with champagne/silver stripes, I designed this dramatic headboard for the client.  My pencil sketch is below.

***Why simply stripe a piece of furniture when you can add to the complexity, make your upholsterer a little crazy and take the room to the next level?

My illustration to communicate to the upholsterer how I wanted the stripe to appear on the custom headboard.***

THE PLAN COMES TOGETHER:

Installation days are always crazy fun.  This particular day, there were 5 of us respecting the space.  There is nothing more satisfying than working along with such professionals with all of us driven toward the exact same goal…to make the room perfect!

"During" Drapes and rods going up.

"During" Time to begin assembling and making the bed with custom designed bedding.

"During" The headboard begins to make it's way onto the wall.

"During" The guys just brought this piece in. It is magnificent! I should have taken a shot of the inside...you would melt with the velvet lined drawers. I have marked where the TV and sconces are to be hung.

"During" The chandelier goes up in front of the new silver drapes.

DRUM ROLL…..THE DREAM IS HERE:

Finally!  After a long day, you can see the fruits of all the labor.  Months of planning come down to this moment as we now get to enjoy it and stand behind the camera.  It is a beautiful thing.

What did this Client have to say?  Well, she LOVED it!  She went on and on.  Her friends went on and on.  Her family went on and on.  I could go on and on with how pleased she and her husband were with the results and that is what matters to me.  I never really “leave” a job.  I am there if anything ever comes up and to make sure they are 110% thrilled.  I hate to leave, but it is time to continue with the next design spinning in my head….

****What do YOU think of this space?  I would love to hear!  What is your dream bedroom?  Everyone’s is very different and that is what makes each one so great.

"After"

"After" A glorious fabric contrast...unexpected.

"After" The silk drapes are so luxurious with a strong hand.

"After" The hand-carved detail at the top is really something and so very special. I love the space between the upholstered fabric and the carved wood. Did they get the stripe right off of my sketch?

"After" Yes! The fabric on the very custom headboard looks just like my sketch. Striking is the word! Custom silver leaf side tables with plenty of storage.

"After" The diamond studded fabric on the shams add sparkle and catch the sun. Luxury.

"After"

"After" A dramatic finish. The piece looks so spectacular. This photo simply doesn't do it justice...or any part of this room justice!

"After" Such a fantastic finish on this piece. That is a huge way to tell the difference in quality on a piece...the finish.

"After" How wonderful to take a bath with this chandelier on the dimmer. Sparkle and shimmer to relax the day away.

"After" The drapes are the perfect length to add drama, beauty and keep clear of stray bubbles. They are lined to not let light in for a peaceful night's sleep.

"After" Bubbles over bubbles...

"After" and a great finish.

Our Bronze Awarded Room…The “Befores” and “Afters”

The Master’s Bedroom Sitting Area, BEFORE and AFTER

Generally, the Master Bedroom is the last room in the house to get any attention and this client’s home was no exception.  All of the furniture that hadn’t found a special place and the oddball pieces made their way here.  It was time for a change.

She wanted it to be feminine, but not too much.  She loved soft colors…blues especially.  This sitting room was off the Master, of which I had painted a beautiful blue, so I wanted this sitting room to have a different ratio of colors.  There was to be a space for her, one for him and comfort was of utmost importance.

Master sitting room "BEFORE"

Master sitting room "AFTER"

I was first inspired by the piece I found for the space that you can see to the right…a Chinese Chippendale frame surrounding a pair of blue birds.  It looked like a soft summer day to me, so I decided to create the “rest of the afternoon” in the space it would crown.

For him, a very comfortable chair with a good depth and handsome style.  For her, a soft loveseat to sit, curl up in or just relax.  To stretch their legs in front of the sunny window or to relax before bed, an ottoman and a half.  It will not only make sitting more enjoyable, it can hold a tray of tea or catch a book set down mid-chapter.  The old, flat carpet was replaced with a rich Oak floor under the client’s rug.  Once a mismatched space, it now is the perfect spot to share morning coffee.

Swatch Botch? How To Choose Paint Colors

Dear Jill,
I love the colorful rooms I see in magazines but when I try to imitate them I fall short.   My house now looks embarrassing. Should I just go all beige?  Help!
– Leslie in Overland Park, KS

BEFORE: From gold to a...

AFTER: ...soft, jeweled turquoise.

Hi Leslie,
What?! Beige—in Kansas City?  We may be famous for fountains, but there’s nothing watered down about our color palette…intense KC Royals blue, hot red KC Chiefs, and lush green Corporate Woods. (Even Andre’s chocolate brown can be intense!) But I understand your frustration.

Wall color is a difficult part of a design.  It is easy to fall in love with all the pretty color squares at the paint store only to have them scream “juvenile!” once they expand to fill your walls. Poorly chosen paint can give you that sick feeling in your stomach when you first step back to admire the room and realize you made a big fat faux pas.

Just differentiating paint colors is a job in itself. When swatches are side-by-side on a paper strip, your eye naturally compares one color to the next, which can be misleading. Just as you don’t want to stand by the best-looking person in the room (unless he or she is your date,) you need to separate your final color selections from each other to see the value and shade each truly offers.

BEFORE: From a light gold to a...

AFTER: ...striking, bold red.

Remember also that when the breakfast bowls are put away and the evening cocktails come out, there is a rebirth for all wall colors.  Each phase of daylight (and moonlight!) will completely change how a color dresses your walls. Shadows, light sources and reflections conspire to create a very different wall color at dusk—one you might relate to as you would an ogre or as a handsome man in a three-piece suit.  (No offense to Shrek, but I say pick the latter and head down to the Capital Grille!)

But all beige?  Please don’t.  You must be subscribing to the “neutral” myth, one I’m convinced was created by fearful real estate agents who needed something to tell tacky home sellers.  I once created a red and green interior for a home in Brookside that turned out stunning! (No, it didn’t look like Mrs. Claus lived there.) When it came time to sell, the Realtor® was scared of the color. I insisted the house was to remain as painted and suggested he increase the asking price. After he politely said I was a nut job, he raised the price to prove his point.  The client had four offers in three days—all for full price.

BEFORE: From an olive green to an...

AFTER: ...unexpected and striking black.

Often color is compromised when building a custom home and the colors are chosen before anyone has a visual reference.  With an exhaustive amount of decisions to make during construction, many people feel overwhelmed and they settle on beiges or off-whites and hope for the best.  A better idea is to complete the design plan once the blueprints are drawn. In doing so, superior colors and materials for the walls and other surfaces can be properly chosen the first time.  Too often, people lose sight of the final product in such a detailed process.  But if they are spending a fortune to create their dream home…is plain vanilla the best answer?   “Neutrals” can be very unflattering to skin tones as well.  I can’t remember the last time I told my girlfriend, Jean, “the dress I am wearing to the party is Johnson County Beige” or “your engagement ring is lovely—it’s so neutral!”

BEFORE: From a worn red to a...

AFTER: ...fresh, peaceful space to study.

But by now you may be asking yourself what the alternative may be. I submit this idea: think about the colors you are drawn to over and over again in all aspects of your life.  Have faith and trust your instincts. Don’t be seduced by the painful logic, “If you don’t like the color, then just paint it again!”  Now really, my friends, who wants to paint twice?  To get it right the first time, separate and hang your color options on the wall.  I recommend using larger swatches (obtained through a reputable dealer or by calling the paint manufacturer.)  Study them day and night; move them around; take them all down and view each one at a time.  And one more trick: make your final color decision AFTER the rest of the room is designed. You can tweak wall colors very easily, but that beautiful heirloom chaise you plan to recover –in a smashing flame stitch, of course—only works with so many hues.  Just remember:  fabrics and furniture first, lighting and accessories second, carpet and paint last.  Don’t chicken out on me, Leslie.

New York, (before) New York (after)!

There is nothing more fun that comparing a space before we touched it to after we completed a project.  This apartment in NY was no exception!

The client loves blue, but didn’t want a soft blue.  The room was to be “strong” and unique, but gorgeous, rich and interesting to study.  The couple wanted as much seating for guests as possible in the small space.

"BEFORE"

"BEFORE"

We gave the apartment a great deal of space to sit, relax and laugh with guests.  The daybed/sofa is a wonderful solution as it also can double as a bed for guests to spend the night.  The ottoman can be used as a table, a place to rest your feet or to sit and enjoy the fire.

"AFTER"

The rich contrast of the patterned rug gives the space much visual interest and is wonderful next to the mantle’s details.

"AFTER"

Such a fantastic table below here…beautiful in the space.  So many straight white lines in the rest of the room make it’s curves magnificent.

"AFTER"

For morning coffee, or an elegant dinner for two, these mild quatrefoil chairs contrast beautifully against the velvet drapes with their high-sheen upholstery tacks.
