If you’re looking for an easy way to update your house, color can quickly inject some life into your space. Two of the hottest shades this year, yellow and orange, bring to mind citrus and sunshine. This week, we wanted to give you a few, simple tips for each color. Whether you’re comfortable going bold or would prefer a neutral palette, there’s a way for you to bring these hues into your home.

YELLOW
How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun. -Vincent Van Gogh

When it comes to the color psychology of yellow, it’s often described as cheery and warm. But, be warned. It’s said to create feelings of frustration and anger. People are more likely to lose their tempers in yellow rooms, and babies tend to cry more. However, we can’t picture anyone flipping a table in this dining room.

But, it’s not all bad. Yellow can increase the metabolism. Is anyone else getting ready for swimsuit season?

Since yellow is the most visible color, it is also grabs the most attention. Use it in small doses to draw focus, like a traffic sign or in advertisements.

Not sure how to use yellow? Try it with white. The combination is classic and beautiful. We think pale yellows can make a room feel wonderful, bright and sunny. It’s very pretty with lots of natural light.

ORANGE
Orange is very blatant and vulgar. It makes you immediately start having feelings.–Wolf Kahn

A combination of yellow and red, orange is considered an energetic color. It can call to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and warmth. As a matter of fact, tangerine was named color of the year. I wonder if it gets a crown.

Like yellow, orange is also used to draw attention. It is a wonderful accent color and in a way, is refreshing. There is something very citrus about orange, and to us, it’s a very happy color.

That being said, orange is a more aggressive shade with lots of energy. We wouldn’t typically use it in kids’ rooms, as it could make settling down more difficult. However, it can be quite lovely kitchens.

With the emergence of Steampunk as an interior design trend, it’s no surprise that furniture is experiencing some innovative changes. To add something eye-catching to your home, consider a piece of metal wrapped furniture. By using traditional or vintage shapes, these pieces can give a nod to the past in a way that feels both familiar and futuristic.

Most of the pieces we’ve seen are wrapped with aluminum and steel. Some of the most exciting examples use a mix of materials. Isn’t this metal and leather chair incredible?

These extraordinary pieces are typically handmade. By using a process called cladding, the metals are bonded together to protect the inner metal from corrosion.

In addition to those with smooth planes, there are also ones with a lot of texture. Some used a thinner metal to create a “wrinkled” look similar to the one seen on the trunk below.

Because of its industrial edge, these pieces are durable and ready for your next cocktail party. Don’t worry about setting drinks on them. They’re treated not to rust.

Art Deco emerged as a style in the early 20th century. Optimistic, it reflected the sensibilities of the time. Think of women in fringed dresses with bobbed hair, champagne coupes and The Great Gatsby. It was a time filled with change and glamour.

One, iconic example of Art Deco design is the Chrysler Building in New York City. Take a look at the building’s lines, reflective surfaces and details for inspiration.

Incorporating pieces from this era into your home is simple, and the effects are devastatingly chic. Can’t you just picture yourself getting ready for a night on the town in this bedroom?

There are a few things to keep in mind when hunting for Art Deco pieces. Typical design elements include shiny, lacquered surfaces and crystal chandeliers. Common patterns from the era are sunbursts, chevrons and zigzags. When it comes to color, choose bright ones. The details are often machinelike, while surfaces are bright and reflective.

Many smaller pieces were said to be designed to look like hopes for the future. The traditional shapes of years passed were simplified. Instead of curves and swirls, the new lines were angular with grander, sweeping curves. The overall effect is fresh, sleek and modern with a healthy dose of elegance.

This year, patterns are making a big comeback. In the past, they were primarily used in traditional rooms, while textures were more commonly found in contemporary spaces. But now, they’ve become so fun and funky that they’re being used in a variety of styles.

With an assortment of shapes and sizes, patterns play really well with others. They can be geometric or organic, and with their growing popularity, there is something out there for everyone. Ikat is one pattern that is particularly hot this year.

Mature and clean or sensual and sassy, they have ability to add dimension to mundane spaces. Here’s a picture of a room before we added pattern. We included this as a cautionary tale to show you the effect that no pattern or contrast has on a room…not so exciting….

The Houdini of design, pattern is a great way to draw attention to an area or take it away. It can make a space seem larger or smaller. For example, horizontal stripes can make a space seem wider, while lower and vertical stripes do the opposite.

Add it to a space with wallpaper, fabric, tile or paint. It could also become part of the architectural design. Picture a patterned ceiling structure.

To make a space more interesting, we love to vary the scale of patterns. For example, we’ll use pillows in large, medium and small prints on a single sofa in a room to create visual interest.

But when adding a pattern, remember to balance the “weight” of it with what is going on the other side of the room. Other than that, trust your instincts and start adding your favorite patterns to your space now.

Steampunk, a blend of vintage, Victorian style and today’s technology, has found its way into the interior design world. Wonderfully bizarre and alluring, the style is best known for oddly beautiful objects, art and rooms. If you were throwing a dinner party and Steampunk was a guest, it would be the person telling interesting, somewhat unbelievable stories.

Though you may be unfamiliar with the term, you’ve probably seen the look. Movies like Hugo and The Golden Compass draw on this design sense. Think science fiction meets the Industrial Revolution.

The concept has been around since the 1980’s, but it’s recently become one of the hot, new trends for 2012. By taking elements from the Victorian era and mixing them with current technology, Steampunk can be described as pure fantasy. Still not sure? We’ve included photos from fashion, as well as interior design to give you a clearer picture.

Incorporating this look into your home is fairly simply. Start by looking for items using machines, wood, cogs, polished metals, rivets and leather straps in unique ways.

Steampunk spaces reflect a mix of old and new…machine and steam. An example of a new “classic” is this crystal chandelier within the metal sphere. This piece would be absolutely stunning in any space.

Here’s a second example using metal steins.

No matter how you decide to use it in your home you can be assured the result will be visually stunning and unexpected, which quite frankly, is how we’d like to be described.

After showing you a week’s worth of sexy suites, we invite you to take a look at one last design solution. In this show-stopping room…even the dog looks fancy.

Decorative pillows and an ornate armoire add an international, worldly flair to this room by channeling the Far East.

The key to the opulent look is in the details. Gold accents add an air of elegance, and mirrored surfaces reflect light.

In a lot of homes, the master bedrooms are the last spaces to receive any design attention. But in our eyes, they deserve so much more. When it comes to creating the perfect suite, we think the details matter so much. From the closet to the bed, we design retreats to support the homeowners’ love for each other.

We think a beautiful dressing area is the perfect place to get ready for a romantic date.

This bedroom is an excellent example of how even the closet can add to the glamour of a great master suite. If you’ve never thought a closet could be beautiful, you have to see this.
